South Indian Floor Drawings - 4
Introduction
Drawing floor drawings (kolams) is interesting and can be fun. With an array of dots kolams can be drawn to different levels of complexities. Simple kolams can be drawn by using small loop od lines arranged in a symetrical way. In this page shows how to draw a simple kolam by using a small array of dots.
The figure on the left side above shows the array of dots which we selected for drawing this kolam. this array consist of 7 dots in the central column of the array. on either side of this centre column two columns each with 5 dots. at the extream end there are single dots on both the left hand and write hand side of the array.
The second drawings shows a simple loop drawn through the gaps between dots.
In the third drawing we can see thhree more similar loops drawn in an ovelaping way.
The fourth drawing shows another loop that runs along the periphery of this kolam design.
In the fifth drawing all the loops are shown combined together. In this drawing we can find four dots which are not linked.
Small circles are normally drawn around such independent dots in a kolam and the last drawing shows four circles around the above mentioned dots to complete the Kolam pattern.
The above is a simple to draw "kolam" pattern that consists of 9 loops. the same can be drawn with small adjustments to make more complicated "kolams". Separate loops can be connected together. Go to "South Indian Floor Drawing - 5" to find out how this can be done.
